Cover Inspiration

Alison Anselot: Pantone Food, 2013

A photography series created by Anselot that matches the colour of food to its corresponding Pantone swatch.

The food is centred in the middle of the frame, and the compositions are almost symmetrical. For my cover image, I think I want to have block colour that will make the potato stand out. I want the background to be bright and bold, and the potato to still be in its original form, with dirt etc, to act as if it has just been uprooted for the photo. Making it almost a symbol and important figure.

I think the red colour symbolises importance and prestige so I plan on using that.

Matt Russell: 2018

The Guardian have a food magazine weekly, which is aimed for the middle class. I think the choice of photo, and composition of the food is well composed. The food takes up at least 3/4 of each page, being the main focal point. I like the use of bright colours and the balance of saturation and brightness. I think these images are eye-catching yet very simple.

I think I will use the same aspects in my own cover, making the food the predominant feature of the page, which a simple title. I like the way The editor has also limited the page to 3-4 colours, and that the text is representative of the food.

Thinking about the context for my publication

Like the Guardian's Feat magazine, I think my publication could be included in a weekly news paper. However, I want it to appeal to people my own age (and similar ages) and I do not think that many will pick up a newspaper. Although I feel that the issues I will discuss in my publication are quite middle class I want it to be accessible to everyone from any age/background with a focus on impressionable teenagers and young adults.

I think advertising online, through instagram (sponsors) or online website would work much better. I think as I had originally set out for my pages to be individual posters  they could work as advertisements on the trains, in hospitals or even on buses.

Ocado Magazine

Food photography and styling is something that I think will be pertinent throughout my project. I think the basis of my work will follow that of photography, and manipulating images to create advertisements, etc.

Kerry Hughes is a set designer, who bases her work around small scale objects. She focuses on the shape and composition of the subject, contrasting and mimicking the colour and pattern from it to the background. This is something that I think could work well for some posters and images of food.

Fashion's Kitchen Magazine

Buffalo Zine

The latest instalment takes the bold stance of fusing food and fashion — and in resolutely Buffalo style these two rarely seen together topics delivered through a fun and decadent series of recipes, editorials and articles. Piqued with intrigue about its Fashion’s Kitchen we caught up with some of the Buffalo Zine team, Adrián González-Cohen, Liam Hess and David Uzquiza, to find out why they decided to bring the worlds of fashion and food together.

Pan Publication

The studio’s work is both distinctive and rich in references, conveying a confident knowledge of design history. Its recent work for Pan is a great example of this, a magazine centred around “the exciting world of bread”. Wanting this to sit at the forefront of its approach, the two covers the studio has recently designed for the magazine put still life shots of bread in the spotlight, sitting beside a typographic logo for the publication referencing 60s style wordmarks, with an “A” as squidgy and round as a ciabatta loaf.

Another project just as thoughtful as Pan is Castillo Negro a publication for artist Paula Rubio Infante, taking a scholarly approach to design in comparison to the previous project’s playfulness. However, both confidently disrupt tradition, with flourishes of contrasting imagery and design details.

finding a location for shoot

I think this image is really powerful, and fitting for my publication. As my zine is called 'Hot Potato' I thought that this was a really fitting way of show casing it. Having a pile of potatoes and the zine on top could make for a really interesting image. I think I will also play on the idea of a physical hot potato, maybe placing the zine in the oven? or cooling rack?
