FORTUNE COOKIES

There are many theories about who, what, where and why the fortune cookie was invented. The most important thing, is contrary to belief - they were created in America not in China/Japan. David Jung, a Chinese immigrant living in Los Angeles and founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company, invented the cookie in 1918. Concerned about the poor he saw wandering near his shop, he created the cookie and passed them out free on the streets. Each cookie contained a strip of paper with an inspirational Bible scripture on it, written for Jung by a Presbyterian minister.

Fortune cookies became common in Chinese restaurants after World War II. Desserts were not traditionally part of Chinese cuisine, and the cookies thus offered Americans something familiar with an exotic flair.

Although there have been a few cases reported of individuals actually enjoying the texture and taste of fortune cookies, most consider the fortune to be the essence of the cookie, and dispose of the cookie. Early fortunes featured Biblical sayings, or aphorisms from Confucius, Aesop, or Ben Franklin. Later, fortunes included recommended lottery numbers, smiley faces, jokes, and advice. Politicians have used them in campaigns, and fortunes have been customized for weddings and birthday parties. Today messages are variously cryptic, nonsensical, feel-good, hectoring, bland, or mystifying.

Using fortune cookies for marketing

in 1988, Mike Fry invented the creation of fortune cookies in different colours and flavours. Over 500 companies use this service for their own marketing campaigns - ie, Goggle, Apply, Honda and Starbucks.

In 2013, Audi promoted their SUV Q5 with a flip book. The commercial was filmed in South Africa. It follows the story of a couple as they leave their hotel and begin to drive into the country in their Audi Q5. It documents their journey, as they pass certain points in the journey. It ends with the quote - Everything happens on cue - "Vorsprung Durch Technik."

Traditional fortune cookie (OPEN)

Fortune cookies often give you helpful advice, to improving your life. For example - this iPhone case shows a fortune on it mentioning to quit social media as it will make you happier. Many modern day fortunes will have some connotations to social media by the original ones often relate to influencing typical lifestyles,

Creating a Flip book

A flip book is traditionally a book with a series if different pictures varying gradually from one page to another - creating a moving image when he pages are flicked through rapidly. Usually illustrated for children, they now have been geared for adults with photography rather than drawings. Sometimes, flip books are not sold as a book, but are often found on corners of book pages, which is usually not so prominent.

Rather than reading a book from left to right, the viewer can just look at the same spot, as the pages turn and the pictures change. In German - Daumenkino - the literal translation for the is a 'thumb-cinema', which is fitting for this process.

Finnish Passport - Flipbook

In 2012, the Finnish passport design contained a a flip book animation of a walking moose.

MASH (game)

A typical game played at school - known as a paper-and-pencil/pen game - other games include - Dots and Boxes, Tic-tac-toe, etc.

MASH is a multiplayer paper-and-pen game - usually played to predict ones future. MASH stands for  Mansion, Apartment, Shed/Street and House. There are many different variations for this game such as RAP MASH (rich, average, poor).

Categories usually vary from car and future spouse to job and many others. I think I could create an interactive game to play for fussy eaters/ or for them you don't know what you want to eat.

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals is a nonfiction book written by American author Michael Pollan. The book ultimately asks the simple question- what should we have for dinner. As omnivores, humans are faced with a wise variety of food choices, which results in a dilemma. In the book, Pollan suggests that before modern food preservation and transportation technologies, we could solve this issue primarily through cultural influences. The relationship between food and society, is now confused.

Pollan explores each food chain that we use, which include; industrial food, organic food and the food we generate ourselves. He follows the steps from the source to the final meal, and throughout has written a critical understanding of that he thinks the 'American way of eating' is.

The Dinner Party - Judy Chicago

1979 - Brooklyn Museum, New York.

The Dinner Party is an installation, widely known as the first feminist artwork, it functions as a symbolic history of women in civilisation. On the triangular table, there are 39 elaborate seating spaces. These spaces are set for 39 mythical and historical famous women. (Empress Theodora of Byzabtium, Virginia Woolf and Georgia O'Keeffe are some of the women.)

At each seat, there is a hand-painted china plate, ceramic chalice and cutlery, and an embroidered napkin. Each space, expect for two, depicts a brightly coloured vulva form. Judy Chicago is said to have got inspiration after attending a dinner party in1974. She recalled "The men at the table were all professors,”and the women all had doctorates but weren’t professors. The women had all the talent, and they sat there silent while the men held forth. I started thinking that women have never had a Last Supper, but they have had dinner parties."

There are 13 seats on either side of the triangular table. The first side, was dedicated to women from Prehistory of the Roman Empire. The second, honours women from the beginning of Christianity to the Reformation and the final side from the American revolution to feminism. The Dinner Party celebrates traditional female accomplishments such as textile arts and china painting, which have been framed as craft or domestic art, as opposed to the more culturally valued, male-dominated fine arts.

The white floor of triangular porcelain tiles, called the Heritage Floor, is inscribed with the names of a further 998 notable women (and one man, Kresilas, who was included as he was thought to have been a woman called Cresilla) each associated with one of the table place settings.

Analysis

From my results I can see some interesting and unpredictable answers.

  1. Out of the 47% of people that said they prefer to eat alone, around 63% of them were female.
  2. Out of the 63% of people who considered themselves emotional eaters, around 75% of them were male.
  3. Out of the 72% of people who preferred to it out, around 71% of them were female.
  4. Out of the 22% of people that would rather have dunch, around 88% of them were male.
  5. For the 53% of people who preferred savoury, around 47% of people were female.

I plan to use this data to generate some designs that raise awareness of how people respond to food. I think it's important to highlight how stereotypically we expect woman to use food as an emotional backfill. However, from my results it seems that many more men seem to do this instead.
